Event Description

Andrew Batchelor, Deputy Regional Chief for the Western Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General

Mr. Batchelor is an attorney for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, which prosecutes crimes, enforces regulations, and defends Massachusetts and its employees in civil lawsuits. Mr. Batchelor earned his A.B. in Geosciences from Princeton University in 2003, and a J.D. from Northwestern University in 2008. In between, he worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and then a small non-profit through Princeton Project 55. After law school, Mr. Batchelor was a civil litigator for a large law firm, a prosecutor in a Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office, and then an Assistant Attorney General for the state. He currently supervises attorneys doing work across the breadth of the office’s mission and carries his own civil caseload.  



Dr. Alexandra Hakala, Research Physical Scientist and Technical Portfolio Leader for R&IC Onshore Unconventional Resources Research

Geologic and Environmental Systems Directorate, Research and Innovation Center, National Energy Technology Laboratory

Dr. Hakala is an Environmental Geochemist whose research interests focus on how chemical reactions can increase the efficiency of producing energy while minimizing environmental impacts, and how to monitor the sources of fluids and gases in natural systems. Dr. Hakala earned her A.B. cum laude in Geosciences with a Certificate in Environmental Studies from Princeton University in 2003, and her Ph.D. in the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University in 2008 where she was a U.S. EPA Science to Achieve Results Graduate Fellow. She started as an ORISE post-doctoral research associate at NETL in 2008, and became a NETL research scientist in 2009. While at NETL, Dr. Hakala has led multiple projects related to onshore unconventional shale gas development as both a portfolio leader and principal investigator, and received a 2017 Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering for her research on subsurface geochemistry.
