Tanya Marshall, a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Daniel Sigman’s lab, has been named a Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Marshall is among 15 scholars from across the university to be awarded this fellowship. With a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Marshall began an international collaboration with Sigman during graduate school. Marshall’s research focus is on quantifying biogeochemical processes that impact ocean productivity and carbon storage. The Princeton Presidential fellowship presents an ideal opportunity for Marshall to work directly with Sigman and other faculty in the Department of Geosciences to develop new quantitative frameworks for interpreting nitrogen isotopes in the ocean. Nitrogen isotope ratios of various forms of oceanic nitrogen (organic and inorganic) provide information on key processes that drive nutrient cycling and ecosystem dynamics in the modern and past ocean.
