The grads organized the event in Great Hall using equipment from classrooms, with assistance from Faculty and Staff.

On Wednesday, October 9, 2024, graduate students Will Eaton and Theo Green organized a GEO trivia night as an evening social event for the department. The event was a success regarding the fun-factor for all who participated! The categories were ‘guess the faculty childhood photo’ (thanks to Prof. Frederik Simons, Prof. Blair Schoene, Prof. Laure Resplandy, Prof. Allan Rubin, and Prof. Tom Duffy for providing photos); general knowledge; movies (including a photoshopped image of Prof. Simons into iconic movie posters); Princeton and Guyot facts; music; history and geography; hidden theme (where each answer tied to a geologic time interval name); and a ending with a speed round.

There was a great turnout, with about 50 people and 9 teams competing for glory and GEO tote bags! The winning team (pictured below), were “Cloudy with a Chance of Answers,” and the runners-up were the “Couch Potatoes.”

Will and Theo ran the event in the Great Hall, with facilities manager Mike Morris, and department manager Nora Zelizer, helping with all the logistics, such as getting tables ordered and prizes organized. They also provided pizza and drinks for attendees, with help from admin assistant Mary Rose.

The event lasted about 2.5 hours for the 8 rounds of trivia questions, scoring, and victory celebrations.

Will and Theo appreciate everyone’s help, the event ran smoothly and they were surprised with participate enthusiasm for trivia! Given the kind response, they are thinking about running another trivia night in the future, so keep a lookout for that potentially in the spring.

Prof. Simons and Maya Chung provided photographs of the event.
