AGU President Lisa J. Graumlich begins by the James B. Macelwane medalists.
On December 11, 2024, Brenhin Keller, a 2016 Geosciences alumnus, was honored at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2024 Fall Meeting along with many other honorees. Keller was one of five James B. Macelwane medalists announced. His work in pioneering computational geochemistry is considered to have resulted in iconoclast contributions to Earth evolution. During his speech, Keller reflected on his early career by thanking Geosciences mentors, Professors Blair Schoene and Frederik Simons. He goes on to mention many more collaborators and students in his role as an assistant professor of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College.
The celebratory program concluded with a listing of all the remaining union fellows. As names scroll across the screen, 1996 Geosciences alumna Suzan van der Lee is seen listed. van der Lee is the department chair, the Sarah Rebecca Roland Professor, and the director of computing at Northwestern's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. She teaches advance studies in geophysics, seismology and mathematics.
Colleagues continued to congratulate various 2024 recipients, ending with a final note from GEO graduate student Maya Chung to Professor Gabriel Vecchi.
