Rilla McKeegan, 3rd year graduate student in the Schoene Lab, brought the fascinating world of rocks and minerals to children and their parents when she hosted Science Saturday at the Mercer County Library. Students learned about the rock cycle and the layers of the Earth through custom coloring pages and then tried their hands at identifying some rocks from the Geoscience Department collections. After finishing their rock identification worksheets, they matched their observations to a location on a large illustrative cross section. Together, the kids figured out what the crust, mantle, and many exciting sites within (volcanoes, mountain belts, subduction zones, and more!) are made of!
