Professor Gabriel Vecchi, the Knox Taylor Professor of Geosciences, Director at High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) and Deputy Director at Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System (CIMES), accepted his Fellowship at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2024 Fall Meeting in Washington D.C. on December 11, 2024. He was honored for his ground-breaking work on understanding short- and long-term changes to the oceans and atmosphere, including the monsoons, El Niño, and the impact of climate on tropical cyclones, weather extremes, and global patterns of rainfall and drought. He is among fewer than 0.1% of AGU members to be selected annually as a Fellow at the AGU, which is the world's largest Earth and space science association. Professor Vecchi was touched that his Ph.D. candidate and advisee Maya Chung was selected by AGU to introduce the new Class of Fellows.

Professor Gabriel Vecchi is a Faculty Director of High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI) and an active faculty member at Geosciences, teaching courses in Climate Sciences. He joined the Princeton faculty in 2017, and has served as HMEI director since 2021. He is also an associated faculty member in Princeton’s Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences program and the deputy director of the Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System, a joint institute between Princeton University and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.

In his own words, Professor Gabriel Vecchi states that he was “honored to have been selected as one of this year's AGU Union Fellows, and thrilled to have been able to celebrate this with great friends and my lovely daughter at AGU 2024. I have been blessed with generous mentors, excellent colleagues, a supportive family, outstanding educational opportunities (both in Venezuela, gracias Liceo San José y Escuela Comunitaria, and the USA, Somerville High, Rutgers University and University of Washington), phenomenal institutions to thrive in (NOAA-GFDL and Princeton University), and institutions and agencies willing to fund our work.” The entire Honors Ceremony can be viewed on the AGU Honors webpage: https://www.agu.org/honors/ceremony.

Please join the department in congratulating Professor Gabriel Vecchi on this prestigious achievement.
