Research Summary:  I am interested in exploring unexpected microbes in certain environment. An example is the detection of nitrite oxidizers (previously known as aerobes) in oxygen minimum zones (anoxic environments). I perform stable isotope incubation experiments to determine nitrite oxidation rate and study its substrate kinetics. I also use metagenomics to characterize novel nitrite oxidizing microbes from anoxic seawaters. These studies could unravel mysteries in environmental microbiology and help us better understand biogeochemistry mediated by microbes.
